St. Edmund's Parish Day - Sunday 27th September

A most wonderful Parish Day was enjoyed by many of our Parishioners at Richard and Hilary Grey’s Farmhouse, Barn and beautiful gardens. We were blessed with glorious sunny weather on the day. Helpers and organisers for the Parish Day included  Sandra & Angelo, Natasha, Janet & Francis, Sarah James, Margaret McClinton, Anna Rogers, Hanna Knight, Fiona Rees, Mike McCarthy, Jo Pomeroy and so many other helpers running the games, stalls and  helping set and clear up. The games and activities included bingo, treasure hunt, football, sports, arts and crafts, cake decorating, nail varnish and tattoos. A shared lunch was followed by afternoon tea. A huge thanks to Richard and Hilary for their generosity, Fr Anthony Meredith for celebrating Mass, Elise for the music and  all who came, helped, brought food and made the day so successful.

Surrey Churches' Ride & Stride 2015 - September 12th

The weather forecast was less than encouraging so it was on with the cagoule as I set off for St John’s Farncombe for the 2015 Ride & Stride. Several other regulars – Elizabeth & Peter Sims & Helen McSherry – were already there by 10.00am but they were obviously more optimistic and there wasn’t a raincoat  between them. I chuckled a little to myself. They would almost certainly come to regret that omission. We waited in case of a flood (if that’s an appropriate term) of other cyclists joining us. But they didn’t so, after signing-in, off we set. Approximately ten seconds later, the chain came off Elizabeth’s bike but was soon put back on. We headed uphill through Binscombe to Compton where we signed-in at St Nicholas church, almost a thousand years old, which is unique in England with its double sanctuary. By now it was getting hot (and no sign of rain) so I rolled up my cagoule and just managed to fit it in my rucksack (along with the tea-flask, naturally).

We then headed off to visit the Watts Cemetery Chapel – a wonderful Gothic Revival building. Just as we were leaving, Dean Brodbin joined our little group and off we set to St John the Baptist, Puttenham via the Golf course. When we arrived, we were invited to visit the nearby  200 year-old ‘Eco Camping’ barn as it was Heritage weekend. It offers basic overnight accommodation for weary cyclists. We were tempted to stay but reflected on the fact that our generous sponsors (i.e. you) might be a little disappointed if we gave up after 2 or 3 miles. So it was up and then down that amazingly long hill to Elstead. Cycling at its best. After visiting St James’ church, we arrived ready for lunch, at the United Reform Church where we always receive a very warm welcome. This year was no exception: tea, coffee and delicious fruit cake. We admired their new doors which had been part-funded by last year’s Ride. Then, suitably refreshed, the long haul to Milford and then on to Godalming. We reached St Edmund’s by 2.03 and then the Baptist church (where Julian Lewry was holding a CD & Record Fair). We just missed a rather grand wedding at St Peter & Paul but caught sight of the happy couple climbing aboard a very smart camper van. Our final stop was the United church at 2.35pm. Everyone agreed it had been a fantastic Ride. Not a drop of rain. Our prayers had been answered. But who knows what would have happened if I’d not taken my cagoule with me!
