Godalming campaigners challenge Sainsbury’s over threat to Fairtrade tea

A group of local campaigners have challenged Sainsbury’s decision to abandon the Fairtrade mark on some of its own-brand tea in favour of its own scheme.

Last Saturday morning, 28th October, local Sainsbury’s customers who are also supporters of the Fairtrade Foundation and of CAFOD gathered outside Sainsbury’s Godalming to raise awareness of Sainsbury’s decision to replace the Fairtrade Mark on its Red Label and selected other teas with its own ‘fairly traded’ version. The group submitted over 20 letters to the Store Manager from concerned local people.

Event organizer Jo Lewry, a long-term CAFOD volunteer, said: “Fairtrade guarantees tea producers receive an additional premium payment – on top of the price for their tea – to invest in their businesses and communities as they see fit. We are concerned that tea farmers will lose control of the social premium they would earn under Sainsbury’s alternative scheme, with suppliers instead having to apply to a UK-based board for their funding.”

Father Michaels' Retirement Party

The Parish celebrated Fr Michael's retirement after 22 years as our Parish Priest in a splendid and very well-attended party at the Wilfred Noyce Centre on Sunday 30th April. As always, there was plenty of delicious food - not to mention the wine. The Hall was beautifully decorated. The team organising it had clearly worked extremely hard. To mention just a few: Sandra and Andrew in the kitchen with their team and Andrew Lodge and Francis Quinlan who spoke about how much we have valued Fr Michael as our Parish Priest and our hope that he will enjoy a long and happy retirement in his bungalow in Milford. Hopefully it will soon be ready for him to move in! Fr Michael reflected on his time as a priest going back to when he was ordained before Arundel & Brighton became a separate Diocese. We all hope he has plenty of time to watch cricket (and even some football). Here are a few pictures of this happy event.

Naming Ceremony 2nd April 2017

Our Parish conducts a welcoming ceremony during one Sunday Mass each month for children soon to be baptised. Here are some of them in April with their parents and godparents. The Parish is seen welcoming twins Oliver and Joseph, Myllo, Raphael, Alfred, Taizen and Sophie. It was a joyous and noisy occasion!
